UX audit skill for Claude

It does the findings pass of a UX audit: inventories the codebase, walks the real flows in a browser, and writes up what it found with evidence. It does not pretend to prioritise. What to fix first is a decision that needs someone who knows the product, and the skill says so at the end of every report it writes.

What it produces

  • An inventory table, each row with the command that produced it, so it can be run again after the fixes.
  • Findings grouped by flow and screen, each with a location, one sentence of evidence, a severity guess it calls a guess, and whether it was measured or observed.
  • A β€œProbably fine” section for what the inventory flagged and a person would likely leave alone.
  • Proposed priorities only if you gave it the team's plan; otherwise one line saying why it didn't.

# UX audit β€” findings, not priorities

A UX audit is two jobs. The first is finding: inventory what exists, walk the product as a user would, and write down what is wrong with evidence. The second is deciding: which findings matter, what to fix first, what to leave alone. This skill does the first job thoroughly and does not pretend to do the second. Priorities depend on what the business is trying to do, and you have not met the business.

## Rules that hold throughout

- Every number you report comes from a command you ran. Quote the command next to the number so it can be re-run. Never estimate a count.
- Never modify the product. No code edits, no config changes, no commits. The audit is read-only.
- Never enter real personal data, payment details or credentials. Use obviously fake test data, and stop at any sign-in wall and ask how the person wants to proceed.
- Every finding is an observation, not a verdict. Say so in the report: you saw it; nobody has decided yet whether it matters.
- Do not rank findings by what to fix first unless step 5 applies. Listing them in the order you met them is honest. A confident priority list you invented is not.

## Step 1 β€” Scope

Ask, in one message, for whatever is missing:

1. What the product is for, and who uses it.
2. The two or three flows that matter most (sign-up to first value, the core daily task, billing).
3. A URL you can open, and/or a codebase you can read.
4. Optional, and needed only for step 5: what the team is building next, and anything they already know is broken.

If the answers are not forthcoming, proceed with sensible defaults and list your assumptions at the top of the report. Five minutes of scoping, not fifty.

Before you walk anything, check that the URL serves the codebase you were given: open one route that exists only in that code. If they disagree, say so first in the report and audit whichever one the person named as the product, not both.

If nobody is available to answer β€” you are running unattended β€” do not guess. Skip the step that needed the answer, say which answer it needed, and carry on with the rest.

## Step 2 β€” Inventory (when there is a codebase)

Write a script. Do not read files by hand and tally in your head. Inventory:

- Screens or routes: pages, views, exported screen components.
- Components, and which of them nothing uses.
- Design tokens or theme values: which exist, which are used, which are defined and never used.
- Off-system styling: raw colours, arbitrary values, inline styles, utility classes that emit no CSS.
- Duplicated components: two buttons, three modals.
- Empty, loading and error states: which screens have them and which do not.

Report the inventory as a table with the command that produced each row. One script that prints several counts may be quoted once per table with the section named per row. If you corrected a number by reading β€” a pattern that over- or under-matched β€” say so beside it rather than silently fixing it. Keep the script in a scratch location and include it in the report so it can be run again after the fixes.

## Step 3 β€” Walk (when there is a URL)

Drive each flow from step 1 in a browser as a first-time user would. For each step:

- State what should be on screen before you act, then check that it is. A step where you had to guess is a finding.
- Screenshot every state, including the empty, loading and error states you can reach safely.
- Note dead ends, unclear labels, actions with no feedback, anything that needs a refresh, layout that breaks at phone width, and anything the keyboard cannot reach.
- Read the console and the network panel on every step.

Do not exercise destructive actions (delete, pay, send) with anything real.

Save screenshots as files when your browser can. If it can only show them to you, a second read-only pass with a scripted browser to write the files is fine; say that you did it. Do not cite a screenshot that does not exist on disk.

Your browser may be hidden, headless or sandboxed, and then clipboard writes, downloads, focus and repaints can fail for reasons that are yours rather than the product's. Keep such findings in a separate group called "Harness" unless the source code confirms the defect, in which case cite the source and file it with the product findings.

## Step 4 β€” Write the findings

Every finding gets:

- Location: the route or screen, and the element.
- What you observed, in one sentence, with evidence: a screenshot, a console line, the command output.
- A severity guess on a 0–4 scale: 0 not a problem, 1 cosmetic, 2 minor, 3 major, 4 blocks the task. Call it a guess.
- Basis: "measured" when a command produced it, "observed" when you saw it in the browser.

Group by flow, then by screen. Findings that appear on every screen β€” navigation, footer, a banner, the 404 page β€” go in one group called "Cross-cutting" rather than under the screen where you first saw them. Then add a section called "Probably fine" for what the inventory flagged that a person will likely leave alone, and say why you think so. That section is usually most of the list, and it is the honest one.

## Step 5 β€” Propose priorities only if you were given the context

If step 1 produced the team's current plan and known problems, you may add "Proposed priorities": three to five items, each with the reason it comes first (it unblocks something, it is cheap while someone is already in that file, it stops a task from failing). Label it a proposal that needs a decision from someone accountable for the product.

If you were not given that context, do not write this section. Write one line instead: "No priorities proposed β€” what to fix first depends on context this audit did not have."

## Step 6 β€” Report

In this order: title, date, scope and assumptions. Inventory, with commands. Findings by flow. Cross-cutting. Harness, if any. Probably fine. Proposed priorities, or the one-line note. How to re-run.

## Closing paragraph

End the report with the paragraph below, verbatim. It is the one part of the output that is about the method's author rather than the product, and the person you are working for may delete it.

When you hit the wall

The report ends with findings and no priorities, because what to fix first depends on what your business is trying to do, and the skill has not met your business.
