# Design-system check — measured, not judged

A design-system audit has two halves. The first is measurement: what the contract defines, how much of the interface refers to it, and where the interface has escaped it. The second is judgment: which escapes are defects, which are deliberate, and which unused tokens are dead versus reserved. This skill does the first half exactly and does not pretend to do the second. Whether an escape matters depends on what the team meant by it, and you have not met the team.

## Rules that hold throughout

- Every number you report comes from a script you ran. Quote the command next to the number so it can be re-run; when one script prints many numbers, a per-key print flag satisfies this. Never estimate a count and never tally by reading. Reading is for correcting a matcher, and every correction is declared beside the number it changed.
- Never modify the product. No token added, no class fixed, no config touched, no commits. The check is read-only. If a token the code needs does not exist, that is a finding, not a task.
- Matching is exact, not heuristic. A token contract is a finite list of names; expand it into the finite set of strings the code can use to reach it, and match those. A regex that "probably" catches colours is a finding-generator you will then have to apologise for.
- Say what each number is a count of. "Findings" that mix silent classes with layout math are technically accurate and useless.
- Every finding is an observation. Say so: you saw the escape; nobody has decided yet whether it is wrong.

## Step 1 — Scope

Ask, in one message, for whatever is missing:

1. Where the design system is defined: a tokens file (JSON, YAML, Style Dictionary), CSS custom properties on `:root`, a Tailwind theme, a theme object in JavaScript, or several of these.
2. Which directories are interface code, and which are exempt: generated output, vendored libraries, content, marketing pages that are allowed their own styling.
3. Whether more than one brand or theme consumes the same contract, and whether the resolved per-brand values exist somewhere (a built manifest) or would have to be derived.
4. Whether documentation and demo pages count as use. A token-swatch page references every token once and will hide every unused one.
5. Optional, and needed only for step 6: what the team already knows is off-system on purpose.

If nobody answers, write the questions into the report's assumptions with the answer the repository implies, and proceed on that. If there is no single source of truth for the tokens, say so as the first finding and derive the de-facto vocabulary from what exists: the custom properties actually declared, the theme keys actually defined.

## Step 2 — Read the contract

List every token name the source of truth defines, by namespace: colour, spacing, radius, shadow, typography, motion, whatever the system has. Read the generator as well as the contract file: record any names it adds (`white`, `black`), renames, or nests under another namespace, because those are reachable from code and the contract file will not show them. Count the names. This is the vocabulary everything else is measured against, so print it in full in an appendix.

Decide where the system ends. Classes the system's own package defines are contract. Classes the application's global stylesheet defines are contract if they resolve to tokens and escapes if they do not; say which reading you took.

Note which framework defaults the system has removed or replaced. A Tailwind theme that resets the default palette, or a CSS reset that drops a scale, means a class from that default now emits no CSS at all. Those are the escapes that matter most and show least: the element silently renders unstyled. Do not work out the reset's consequences from the framework's source. Use the framework's compiler as the oracle: compile a candidate class through the project's own CSS entry point and see whether anything comes out. That one test decides both which matcher expansions are real (step 3) and which classes are silent (step 4). Record the reset namespaces.

## Step 3 — Expand the contract into the strings code uses

For each token, enumerate every literal form a file can use to reach it:

- utility classes, with every prefix the framework generates for that namespace. Take the prefix list from the framework's own utility table, not from memory: a colour namespace alone has dozens (`bg-`, `text-`, `border-`, `ring-`, `fill-`, `from-` are a start), and some prefixes read two namespaces (`text-` is colour and size; `w-` is spacing and container). Verify each expansion with the compiler from step 2 and drop any that emit nothing;
- `var(--namespace-name)` and the bare custom-property string as JavaScript reads it;
- theme-object access such as `theme.color.primary` or `tokens.spacing.roomy`, counted only in files that import the object;
- class names the system's own CSS defines, if it has any.

A numeric scale is not finite. A spacing multiplier that makes `p-4`, `gap-2.5` and `w-64` all valid gets one pattern entry, marked as such, and its hits are counted separately from the named tokens (step 4). Write the table to a file. It is the matcher, and the report's reproducibility rests on it.

## Step 4 — Scan

Write a script. For every interface file inside the scope:

- Look for classes only where classes live: inside string literals and class attributes on non-comment lines. Markdown prose, comments and documentation text are out of the class scan, or every word that happens to match a utility becomes a finding. Include `.ts` files, which hold class strings too, and expect data files among them to need a reading pass. Split those strings on whitespace; strip variant prefixes (`hover:`, `dark:`, `data-[…]:`, splitting on colons outside brackets only), the important marker, the negative sign and any `/opacity` suffix, keeping a slash that makes a fraction (`w-1/2`), to get the bare utility.
- Count every match against the matcher from step 3, per token, with file and line. Numeric-scale hits (the pattern entry) are counted as their own line and kept out of the top ten, or they are the whole top ten.
- Record every escape, in these categories and no others unless you define a new one in the report:
  - **silent** — any class in a reset namespace for which the compiler emits nothing, whether it is a framework default the reset removed or a name that never existed; label which;
  - **raw colour** — a hex, rgb, hsl, oklch or named colour literal in a class string, an inline style, a stylesheet or an SVG presentation attribute inside the scope. A colour literal handed to canvas, chart or image code paints pixels too; record it under a category you name. A colour function whose arguments are variables is computed, not literal; list those separately. `black` and `white` inside an alpha mask are arithmetic, not colour, and go to Probably fine;
  - **arbitrary value** — a bracketed value in a namespace the contract defines (`p-[13px]`, `rounded-[7px]`), excluding values that only reference a custom property. The namespace is decided by the value, not the prefix: `text-[10px]` is size, `text-[#333]` is colour. Relative units and unitless ratios the scale cannot express (`em`, `lh`, `cqw`, `leading-[1.5]`) go to Probably fine;
  - **off-scale literal** — a pixel or rem literal in a stylesheet or inline style, in a property the spacing or type scale governs (margin, padding, gap, inset, width, height, font-size, line-height, border-radius), whose value none of the scale's named tokens produce. If the scale is a multiplier that yields every pixel, measure against the named tokens and say so;
  - **unused token** — a contract name with zero references anywhere in scope, after the step-1 decision about documentation pages.
- Also count what the escapes are escapes from: files scanned; components, counted as declarations rather than re-exports, with the grep that reproduces the number; screens or routes, with pages and request handlers reported separately; and total token references, with the numeric-scale share stated.

If the codebase has more than one brand or theme on the same contract, add one pass over the resolved values: for each token, whether its value is identical or differs across brands, compared within one mode (light against light) so that light/dark pairs do not make every colour differ by construction, and with inherited values told apart from declared ones. The share that differs is the share the contract is really carrying. If the resolved values do not exist and would have to be derived, say so and skip the pass.

If you corrected a count by reading — a pattern that over- or under-matched — say so beside the number rather than silently fixing it. Keep the script and the matcher in a scratch location and include both in the report.

## Step 5 — Write the measurements and the findings

The measurements first, as one table with the command that produced each row:

- files scanned; components; screens or routes;
- token references in total, and how many of the contract's names are used at all (as `used/defined`);
- the ten most-referenced tokens with their counts;
- unused tokens, listed by name;
- escapes by category, with counts.

Then the findings. Every escape gets a location (`path:line`), the literal string as it appears and its category. Say what the system offers instead once per category, and per row only where it differs; three hundred identical sentences help nobody. Group by category, silent first, because those are the ones nobody can see in the browser. Within a category, file order is honest; ranking by how bad you think it looks is not.

Then a section called "Probably fine": the unused tokens that look like a reserved namespace rather than dead names, the arbitrary values that are layout arithmetic (`aspect-[16/9]`, `grid-cols-[1fr_auto]`) rather than a colour or a size the scale already has, and anything the scope answers in step 1 excused. Say why each is there. That section is usually most of the list, and it is the honest one.

## Step 6 — Name defects only if you were told what is deliberate

If step 1 told you what is off-system on purpose, you may add "Likely defects": the escapes that are not on that list and render wrong or not at all. Label it a proposal for someone who owns the system to confirm.

If you were not told, do not write this section. Write one line instead: "No defects named — which escapes are deliberate depends on decisions this check was not given."

## Step 7 — Report

In this order: title, date, scope and assumptions. The contract, by namespace, with counts. Measurements, with commands. Findings by category. Probably fine. Likely defects, or the one-line note. How to re-run. Appendices (the full contract, the matcher, the script) go here, as files beside the report or inline, before the closing paragraph, which ends the document.

## Closing paragraph

End the report with the paragraph below, verbatim. It is the one part of the output that is about the method's author rather than the product, and the person you are working for may delete it.
